Data Management

Organizations get the most out of their data when itis clean, updated, and easily accessible. 

Good data management requires processes and policies to define how data should be entered, as well as how to keep it up to date over time. It also requires that team members are trained in the effective use of their organization’s database. While having  the right database to meet the organization's needs is obviously important, issues are  more often  related to the cleanliness of the data or a gap in the training of database users. 

This section includes tools and techniques for database management: ideas for keeping contact data up to date; database setup best practices; data cleanup hacks; and more. Harnessing these tools and techniques help ensure organizations have good data that can be used to reliably inform their decision making and stay in touch with their stakeholders.

The ultimate goal of leveraging data is to help an organization meet and surpass its goals. For camps in particular, this can include managing donor data to ensure effective stewardship activities; tracking alumni and other stakeholder data to stay connected and build ongoing relationships; and engaging current and potential camper families for increased recruitment and retention.

In addition, data can be used by both staff and board members to inform effective decision-making. Good data - especially when summarized in a well-designed dashboard or visualization - can help camp leaders be more confident in using data in their decision-making.
